Driver’s License for Immigrants
Important information about the new process to obtain a Driver’s License for Immigrants.
Effective January 1, 2014, MVA Offices in Maryland will receive applications for a Maryland Driver’s License (DL) or Identification Card (ID) for customers presenting foreign documentation without valid accompanying United States Citizenship and Immigration Services documentation (USCIS).
Before you schedule your appointment, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Have an unexpired foreign Passport.
- File Maryland Income Taxes for the preceding 2 years. If you have already filed your taxes, you need to obtain a certification of tax filings letter from the Maryland Comptroller’s Office. You can self-certify online at www.marylandtaxes.com or you can make an appointment to go the Comptroller’s office.
- Obtain two residency documents. The MVA will accept such as copies of bank statements, utility bills, telephone and cable bills, a residential lease and others.
It is very important that you study the Maryland’s Driver Manual to prepare for the knowledge test. Some applicants will be required to pass a driving test as well.
If you have DUI violations in your record or if you have a driver’s license from another country, there is a possibility that the MVA will require you to take the 3 Hour Alcohol and Drug Education Program.
